Famous Persons coming from the Philippines

It is not like the west where some people become famous through a big divorce case, as in the Philippines there are really few cases of people having a divorce in the Philippines.

Who is the most famous person coming from the Philippines. Well perhaps at the moment the most well-known name is the boxer Manny Pacquino. But who else can be named as a global celebrity?

It is not like the west where some people become famous through a big divorce case, as in the Philippines there are really few cases of people having a divorce in the Philippines.

So who else? Singer Charice? Lou Diamond Phillips or even at a push Bruno Mars, although he was not born in the Philippines at all. The Philippine sis full of talent and as a nation of beautiful singers it is hard to believe that not many have ever made a global impact on the world of singing. Even more strange when you consider that the country speaks and sings in perfect English too.

Most people when talking about the politics of the country will mention the self-acclaimed king and queen of the 1970s Imelda Marcos and her president husband. Some would call them the worse dictators and others would say they were visionaries for the country.

The truth is that it is hard to find a list of recognisable names  from the Philippines that would be well known outside the country. In some public schools children get told that the man who invented the Lunar Rover was Filipino.

Switch on the Light

Some are told that the man that made or invented the florescent light bulbs was Filipino 1857, the French physicist Alexandre E. Becquerel who had investigated the phenomena of fluorescence and phosphorescence, theorized about the building of fluorescent tubes similar to those made today.

American, Peter Cooper Hewitt (1861-1921) patented (U.S. patent 889,692) the first mercury vapour lamp in 1901. The low pressure mercury arc lamp of Peter Cooper Hewitt is the very first prototype of today’s modern fluorescent lights.

Edmund Germer (1901 – 1987) who invented a high pressure vapour lamp, also invented an improved fluorescent lamp. In 1927, Edmund Germer co-patented an experimental fluorescent lamp with Friedrich Meyer and Hans Spanner. Agapito Flores was born in Guiguinto, Bulacan, Philippines on September 28, 1897. He worked as an apprentice in a machine shop and later moved to Tondo, Manila where he trained at a vocational school to become an electrician.

It has been reported that Agapito Flores received a French patent for a fluorescent bulb and that the General Electric Company bought Flores’ patent rights and manufactured and sold his fluorescent bulb (making millions from it). However, all the inventors named above and more predate Agapito Flores’ possible work on any fluorescent bulb.
