It was the Spanish who took over the Philippines in 1565 to 1821 and the country is named after the King of Spain King Philippe, hence Philippines. It was during this time that the people of the Philippines were forced to become Roman Catholic. There was a brief handover of power to the British for two years who captured Manila, but it went back to Spain after that two years.
